Lay a base of white thread to the start of the bend. Tie in a short tail of Lady Amherst Pheasant tippets so one black bar shows, and bind the butts down with loose wraps.
Tie in Peacock herl at the tail with the thread hanging a little forward, then take five or six wraps back to the thread to form a short butt. Back the thread up two wraps, catch the herl off and break it away.
Advance the thread and tie in white floss. Wrap a band at least two layers thick, narrower than the herl butt, since white goes translucent when wet. Back up one turn and catch it off.
Tie the same Peacock herl in again ahead of the band and wrap the front body section forward, stopping with the front third of the shank clear. Break the herl off under tension.
Cut at least twice as much White calftail as you need, pull out the short hairs by hand (calf will not stack) and thin the bunch by about half.
Measure the wing to reach the bend or halfway down the tail. With the thread at the back of the head, pinch-wrap it in and take four or five tight wraps back. Lift the wing and put a wrap under it, or take one complete wrap around the hair alone, so it sits on top rather than flat against the shank.
Snip the wing butts close without crowding the eye and bind them down smoothly.
Choose Grizzly hackle with barbs sized for the hook. Strip more barbs from the side that will lie against the hook, tie in the stem and take about five wraps, each in front of the last, keeping the fibers perpendicular to the shank. Catch off with a couple of wraps.
Sweep the collar back just enough to clear room, build a small head, whip finish and snip any trapped forward fibers.
