Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved scud/caddis hook (TMC 2499SP-BL or 2488H), 12-16
  • Thread white 70 denier

Materials

  • Weight Lead wire under-wrap (as needed)
  • Abdomen Olive dubbing (SLF Master Class / Wapsi Sow-Scud) (as needed)
  • Under rib Copper wire (1 strand)
  • Shellback Tan 1/8 inch Scud Back (1 strip)
  • Over rib 5X monofilament (1 strand)
  • Head/hot spot Peacock or contrasting ice dub (optional) (small pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Add a lead-wire under-wrap over the middle of the curved hook to weight the fly for tight-line/Czech nymphing.
  2. Start white thread (it keeps body colours bright), then tie in the copper under-rib, the Scud Back shellback, and the 5X mono over-rib at the rear.
  3. Dub a fat, tapered scud/caddis-larva abdomen forward over the shank.
  4. Counter-wrap the copper wire under-rib forward in 5-6 even turns, then pull the tan Scud Back shellback over the top of the body.
  5. Rib the mono over the shellback in the same spacing to lock it down and create a glossy segmented back; tie off and trim ribs.
  6. Optionally dub a small dark head/hot spot, whip finish, and pick out the belly to suggest legs.
