Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved caddis/scud hook, 10-16
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Gold or copper slotted tungsten bead (1 tungsten, 5/64-1/8 in)
  • Weight Lead-free (6-10 wraps)
  • Abdomen Tan/hare (hare's ear dubbing)
  • Rib Gold wire (1 strand)
  • Shellback Amber/tan Thin Skin (1 strip)
  • Thorax Dark hare (dubbing, picked out)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the tungsten bead to the eye, add 6-10 wraps of lead-free wire behind it, and start tan thread.
  2. Tie in a tan Thin Skin shellback strip and a gold wire rib at the bend, following the hook curve.
  3. Dub a plump hare's-ear abdomen forward over the rear three-quarters.
  4. Dub a darker, buggier thorax up to the bead.
  5. Draw the shellback tight over the back and bind it behind the bead.
  6. Rib the gold wire forward in 5-6 open turns to segment the body and secure the shellback, then helicopter off the tag.
  7. Pick out the thorax dubbing for legs, whip finish behind the bead and cement.
