Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved caddis/scud hook (Czech nymph hook), 10-16
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Weight Lead-free (8-12 wraps)
  • Abdomen Olive/green material (caddis-green dubbing or crystal dub)
  • Rib Clear/olive mono or wire (1 strand)
  • Shellback Olive thin skin / Scud Back (1 strip)
  • Thorax/collar Brown or peacock dubbing (dubbing)
  • Hot spot Fluorescent orange thread (collar wraps)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook, wrap 8-12 turns of lead-free wire over the shank, and start olive thread.
  2. Bind a strip of olive Thin Skin at the bend for the shellback and tie in the rib, leaving both long.
  3. Dub a fat caddis-green abdomen forward over the rear three-quarters, following the hook curve.
  4. Dub a darker brown thorax at the front.
  5. Pull the shellback tight over the whole back and bind it down at the eye.
  6. Counter-wrap the rib forward in 5-6 evenly spaced turns to segment the body and lock the shellback, then tie off.
  7. Build a few turns of fluorescent orange thread as a hot-spot collar, whip finish and coat the shellback with UV resin for a wet-caddis sheen.
