Cut Bait Midge

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook curved barbless pupa/scud hook, 16-22
  • Thread black or red 12/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver or black tungsten bead (1.5-2.5mm) (1)
  • Body Tapered tying thread, coated (as needed)
  • Rib Fine silver wire (optional) (1 strand)
  • Hot spot collar Fluorescent orange or chartreuse thread (few turns)
  • Coating Thin UV resin over body (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the tungsten bead behind the eye of the curved hook so the fly rides deep and jigs slightly.
  2. Start thread and lay a slim, evenly tapered midge-pupa body along the shank.
  3. Optionally counter-rib with fine silver wire in 5-6 open turns for a segmented flash, then tie off.
  4. Wind a prominent hot-spot collar of fluorescent orange or chartreuse thread directly behind the bead, the bright collar suggests a wounded/vulnerable pupa and is the main trigger.
  5. Coat the body with a thin layer of UV resin and cure for a slim, glossy, durable finish.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead if not sealed under the resin.
