Body segments Black ostrich herl (closed-cell foam / shelf-liner strip)
Legs Black ostrich herl (krystal flash or hackle fibers)
Indicator post Hi-viz orange or chartreuse (1 tuft Antron/poly)
How to tie it
Mount the hook and start thread at the bend.
Bind the end of a thin black foam strip at the bend, wrap thread forward a short way, then fold the foam over and lash it down to raise the fat rear gaster. Keep the two body lumps distinct like a real ant.
Advance the thread to the 60% mark to form the pinched waist.
Splay a few krystal-flash or hackle-fiber legs to each side at the waist.
Post a short tuft of hi-viz Antron straight up at the waist so you can track this low-floating ant.
Fold the front of the foam over to build the head lump and bind it just behind the eye.
Whip finish under the head and trim the foam and post to size.
