Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet fly / spider hook, 14
  • Thread Yellow (Pearsall's Gossamer) 8/0

Materials

  • Silk Yellow Pearsall's Gossamer, waxed (full body)
  • Body Yellow silk dubbed with down from a fox cub (or water-rat fur) (shank)
  • Hackle (legs) Feather from a plover (1 turn)
  • Wing (alt) Feather from the inside of a swift's wing or a lapwing's apron (hackled)

How to tie it

  1. Run the yellow silk to above the barb and back to the two-thirds mark.
  2. Twist a tiny amount of fox-cub down (or water-rat fur) onto the yellow silk and dub a slim body, letting the yellow show through.
  3. Tie in a soft plover feather (or the inside feather of a swift's wing / lapwing apron) by the tip at the two-thirds mark.
  4. Take one sparse turn of hackle, secure, stroke the fibres back.
  5. Build a small head, whip finish and varnish.
