Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 12-20
  • Thread Rusty brown or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Micro fibetts / hackle fibers (2-3 per side, split)
  • Body Rusty brown (fine dubbing)
  • Wings Pearl/clear material (crystal flash or organza, spent)
  • Thorax Rusty brown (fine dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread, running a base to the bend.
  2. Split a few tailing fibers wide to each side, one shank length long, to balance the fly flat on the water.
  3. Dub a slim tapered abdomen forward to the 65% mark, keeping it thin.
  4. Tie in a small bunch of pearl crystal flash across the shank and figure-8 it into flat spent wings, one to each side, clipped to length.
  5. Dub a slightly fuller thorax around the wing base to lock the wings horizontal.
  6. Whip finish a small head and add a tiny drop of cement, the sparse crystal wings catch light like a real spinner's spent wings on the film.
