Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL-3XL dry fly hook, 8-16
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Natural elk hair (1 small clump)
  • Abdomen Orange or amber material (crystal/sparkle dubbing)
  • Body hackle Brown or grizzly hackle (1, palmered)
  • Rib Fine gold wire (1 strand (optional))
  • Wing Natural elk hair (1 clump)
  • Thorax Amber/gold material (crystal dubbing)
  • Front hackle Grizzly hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start orange thread at the bend.
  2. Stack and bind a short elk-hair tail about half a shank long.
  3. Tie in a brown hackle by the tip at the tail, then dub a sparkly crystal abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Palmer the hackle forward over the abdomen in 5-6 open turns and tie off (counter-wrap fine wire through it for durability if using).
  5. Stack a clump of elk hair and bind it as a downwing over the abdomen, tips reaching the tail, butts trimmed at the thorax.
  6. Tie in a grizzly hackle at the front, dub a short crystal thorax, then wind the hackle through the thorax in 4-5 turns.
  7. Tie off, build a small orange head, whip finish and cement.
