Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry fly hook (TMC 200R style), 6-14
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Natural elk hair (1 clump)
  • Abdomen Orange permanent marker (Kaufmann Stimulator blend / crystal dubbing)
  • Body hackle Furnace or brown hackle (1, palmered)
  • Wing Natural elk hair (1 clump)
  • Thorax Amber/gold material (crystal dubbing)
  • Front hackle Grizzly hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the long-shank hook and start orange thread at the bend.
  2. Stack elk hair and bind a tail about half a shank long, butts trimmed forward under the abdomen.
  3. Tie in a furnace body hackle by the tip, then dub a bright crystal orange abdomen forward over the rear two-thirds.
  4. Palmer the hackle forward over the abdomen in 6-7 evenly spaced turns and tie off at the 65% mark.
  5. Stack and bind a full elk-hair downwing, tips just past the bend, and trim the butts.
  6. Tie in the grizzly front hackle, dub a short gold crystal thorax to the eye, then wind the hackle through it in 4-5 turns.
  7. Tie off, form a small orange head, whip finish and cement.
