Crystal Egg

Egg · Trout · Steelhead · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Egg/scud hook, wide gap, short shank, 10-16
  • Thread Fluorescent orange 8/0

Materials

  • Egg body Steelhead orange or pink (1 clump Glo-Bug / McFly egg yarn)
  • Flash Pearl Krystal Flash (3-4 strands)
  • Hot spot Red or cerise material (small yarn nucleus (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base over the front two-thirds of the shank.
  2. Lay 3-4 strands of pearl Krystal Flash along the shank and bind so the flash will splay through the egg.
  3. Center a clump of egg yarn on top of the shank at the midpoint and bind with 4-5 firm wraps, keeping the yarn standing up.
  4. For a hot spot, tuck a tiny pinch of red yarn under the main clump before you cinch it. It reads as the egg's live nucleus.
  5. Gather all the yarn straight up, compress it, and take a couple of tight turns at the base to bunch it into a ball.
  6. Whip finish a small thread head in front of the egg and snip the thread.
  7. Stretch the yarn upright and trim it into a tight round ball with one clean scissor cut, leaving the flash sparkling through.
