Crystal Chironomid

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud / pupa, 14-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver bead (Small (optional))
  • Body Black ostrich herl (Tying thread or stripped quill, UV-coated)
  • Rib Pearl/silver material (Fine crystal flash or wire)
  • Breathers White uni stretch (Antron/poly tuft at head)
  • Thorax Black ostrich herl (Dubbing or peacock)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook (add a small silver bead at the eye if desired) and run thread down around the bend.
  2. Tie in the fine crystal-flash rib at the rear.
  3. Build a slim, smooth thread body forward to the 80% mark. Chironomids are skinny, so no bulk.
  4. Counter-wrap the rib in 5-6 open turns, then coat the whole body with a thin layer of UV resin for its crystal shine and durability.
  5. Tie in a small white Antron breather tuft on top at the head.
  6. Build a slim black thorax over the tie-in point and whip finish at the eye.
