Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly, 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Body Black over tan (Layered 2mm foam)
  • Underbody Black ostrich herl (Sparse dubbing)
  • Wing Dun microfibetts (Organza / Zelon with crystal flash)
  • Legs Black/orange rubber legs (Round rubber legs)
  • Sighter Orange permanent marker (Small foam patch on top)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and bind a black-over-tan foam strip at the bend.
  2. Dub a sparse underbody forward.
  3. Pull the foam forward and cinch it down with two thread segments to shape a fat, banded cicada body.
  4. Tie a dun organza wing flat over the back with a couple strands of crystal flash for sheen.
  5. Add rubber legs figure-8 on each side.
  6. Cap the head with a small orange foam sighter so you can see it, then whip finish at the eye.
