Croston's Jig Pin

Classic Recipe

  • Hook heavy barbless jig hook, 8-10
  • Thread olive, brown or tan to match body 6/0

Materials

  • Bead Slotted tungsten bead (4.6mm) (1)
  • Weight Lead-free wire under-wrap / tungsten jig back (as needed)
  • Tail/wing Rabbit zonker or marabou (sculpin colours) (1 strip/clump)
  • Body Dubbing or ice dub (as needed)
  • Flash Pearl or UV flash (few strands)
  • Head Epoxy/UV resin over a broad dubbed head (as needed)
  • Pectoral fins/collar Webby hen or partridge (optional) (few fibres)

How to tie it

  1. Fit the large slotted tungsten bead to the heavy jig hook and add a lead-free wire under-wrap to overload the front. This is a fast-sinking euro streamer built to hold heavy water.
  2. Start thread and tie in a zonker or marabou tail/wing about a shank-and-a-half long for a broad sculpin silhouette.
  3. Add a few strands of flash, then dub a body forward, keeping it slim to sink fast.
  4. Build a broad dubbed head behind the bead to mimic the oversized head of a real sculpin.
  5. Coat the head with epoxy or UV resin and cure. The hard wide head is the signature of the pattern and keeps its profile.
  6. Add optional webby hen/partridge fibres as pectoral fins, whip finish and finish the head.
