Tyer Recipe

  • Hook Salmon single (up-eye), 2
  • Thread Black Veevus A / 8/0

Materials

  • Oval tinsel Silver (small) (Tag)
  • Flat mylar tinsel (silver side) Silver oval tinsel (Body)
  • Black squirrel tail Black deer hair (Sparse, for wing)
  • Saddle/hen hackle Green saddle hackle (1 feather for collar)

How to tie it

  1. Start the black thread and wind back to the hook point; tie in the silver oval and wrap a tag, spreading the thread all the way back.
  2. Tie in the flat mylar, then build up a thread base to fill the space and smooth the underbody so no bump shows.
  3. Wind the mylar forward under firm tension so the thread underneath dents it slightly for spectral highlights; tie off to form a slim silver body.
  4. Tie in a sparse, stacked wing of black squirrel reaching to the end of the hook. Keep it light because the hackle will be wound over its base.
  5. Tie in a green hackle in front of the wing.
  6. Fold the hackle back and wind a backward-swept collar over the front of the wing base, then tie off.
  7. Build a small, neat head, whip finish and add head cement (UV glue).
