Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly, 8-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (2mm foam strip or black dubbing)
  • Underbody Black ostrich herl (Dubbing)
  • Wing Black ostrich herl (Deer or elk hair, down-wing)
  • Legs Black ostrich herl (Round rubber legs)
  • Sighter Orange permanent marker (Poly yarn post)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread; if using foam, bind a black foam strip at the bend.
  2. Dub a sparse black underbody forward to the 70% mark, half the dubbing you think.
  3. Tie a black deer-hair down-wing over the body reaching to the bend, tips flared.
  4. Add rubber legs figure-8 on each side at the wing base.
  5. Tie a small upright tuft of orange poly at the head as a hi-vis sighter, then trim.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye.
