How to tie it
Place the hook in the vise and lay a thread base. Tie a pair of lead dumbbell eyes on top of the shank about one eye-length behind the hook eye so the fly rides hook-point up.
Wrap thread to the bend. Tie in two rubber-leg or pheasant-tail antennae so they sweep back well past the bend, splayed in a V.
Tie in two claws (rabbit zonker strips or marabou clumps) splayed to the sides just in front of the antennae, one shank-length long.
Tie in the ribbing wire and a shellback strip at the bend, leaving both long to the rear.
Dub a fat, tapered abdomen forward two-thirds of the shank, tying in a pair of rubber legs on each side as you go so the legs stand out from the body.
Pull the shellback strip forward over the top of the body and secure it, then spiral the ribbing wire forward over the shellback in evenly spaced turns to segment the carapace; tie off and helicopter the wire.
Dub a small head around and in front of the dumbbell eyes, whip finish behind the eye and clip the thread.
Coat the shellback / carapace with a thin layer of epoxy or Softex, stroking it back toward the tail, and let it cure.
