Topwater · Striped Bass · Bluefish · Jack · Tarpon · Snook · Redfish · False Albacore · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Saltwater hook, 1/0-4
  • Thread None (folded foam)

Materials

  • Body Folded foam sheet (1 piece)
  • Tail Bucktail or flash (sparse)
  • Eyes Stick-on (1 pair)

How to tie it

  1. Cut a fish-shaped piece of sheet foam, like a rounded arrowhead.
  2. Tie a sparse bucktail-and-flash tail onto the rear of the shank.
  3. Fold the foam over the shank, creasing it into a wedge with an open, cupped face at the front, and glue it closed along the shank.
  4. Stick on eyes and color the back with markers.
  5. The cupped fold at the front is the whole engine. It spits water on every strip.

Substitutions

  • Body instead of Folded foam sheet: 2mm craft foam — Standard foam for crease flies; Fly Foam — Specifically made for fly tying
  • Tail instead of Bucktail or flash: EP Fibers — Sparser, dries fast; Flashabou only — Minimal, flashy tail
