Classic Recipe

  • Hook saltwater hook (Tiemco 811S / Mustad 34007), 4-8
  • Thread to match body (tan, white, pink) 6/0 (UNI)

Materials

  • Eyes Small silver bead-chain eyes (1 pair)
  • Underbody/Flash Pearl Krystal Flash (6-8 strands)
  • Overbody Clear D-rib or Larva Lace (1 length)
  • Wing White or tan calf tail (sparse) (small bunch)
  • Wing flash Pearl Krystal Flash (2-4 strands)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie small silver bead-chain eyes on top of the shank about one eye-length back from the hook eye; mounted on top, they flip the fly to ride hook-point up over sand.
  2. Wrap the thread to the bend and tie in a bunch of pearl Krystal Flash for the underbody, plus a strand of clear D-rib.
  3. Wrap the Krystal Flash forward to build a flashy body, cross behind and in front of the eyes, and tie off.
  4. Wrap the clear D-rib forward over the flash in evenly spaced turns for a ribbed, translucent shell, working around the eyes, and tie off at the head.
  5. Tie in a sparse calf-tail wing behind the eye so it sweeps back over the point (riding up. It hides the point in weed and sand), and add a couple strands of pearl flash.
  6. Build a neat thread head, whip finish, and add a drop of head cement.
