How to tie it

  1. Run the end of the Yellow Nano Silk down your dubbing wax and start it about two eye-lengths behind the eye of the TMC 2487.
  2. Tie in the Small Copper Wire along the far side of the shank and wrap back over it well down around the bend.
  3. Peel a clump of Rusty Brown Marabou off the side of the feather, break the wispy tips off with your thumbnail to leave a short brush, and tie it in at the bend with one turn; check the tail at about half a shank long, then add a turn or two.
  4. Lift the marabou, bring the thread back to where it started, and wrap the marabou forward like pheasant tail for a gilled body; bind off just past the thread start and clip the butts.
  5. Rib the copper wire forward through the marabou body, tie it off and break the wire out.
  6. With the thread at about the 60% point, lay the 2mm Fly Foam Yellow slice on top of the shank and tie it down with three turns at about three-quarters tension. Lift the foam, take a couple more turns, and trim the rear of the foam to a short stub.
  7. Touch the thread to dubbing wax and dub the Tannish Yellow Hare's Mask Dubbing from right at the eye back to the front of the foam, then bring the thread to the center of the thorax. Ragged is the plan.
  8. Cut a clump of Natural Mottled Gray Caribou, a little bigger than you think, and stack it; measure the tips one shank length, pinch at that point and cut the butts to make a pre-cut bundle.
  9. Slide the foam back, lay the caribou in the middle of the thorax and take two turns; it is soft and flares easily. Work the thread forward through the butts to the eye.
  10. Wiggle the hair out to each side, spinner style, without fussing. Stretch the foam forward over the thorax, pinch it at the eye and tie off with three or four turns; whip finish under the foam and leave a short stub over the eye.
  11. Brush the wings out to the sides and stroke a yellow Sharpie up and down the hair: the white takes the yellow, the gray stays dark. Then crumple the wings back toward the hook for the cripple look.
