How to tie it
Start the thread two eye-lengths behind the eye, tie in extra-small copper wire along the far side of the hook, and wrap back over it well down around the bend.
Peel a clump of rusty brown marabou from the side of the feather, break off the wispy tips with your thumbnail to leave a short brush, and tie it in at the bend as a tail about a half shank-length long.
Lift the marabou, return the thread to its start point, then wrap the marabou forward like pheasant tail to form a gilled body; tie off just past the thread start and clip the butts.
Counter-effect the body by ribbing the copper wire forward through the marabou, tie it off, and break the wire away.
At the 60% point, lay the 2 mm slice of yellow foam on top of the hook and tie it down with three turns at about three-quarters tension; trim the rear end of the foam to a short stub.
Wax the thread and dub the tannish yellow hare's mask from the hook eye back to the front of the foam, leaving the thread hanging at the center of the thorax.
Cut, clean, and stack a clump of natural caribou hair, measure the tips one shank-length long, and clip the butts square so you have a pre-cut bundle.
Slide the foam back, lay the caribou down in the middle of the thorax, take two turns, let the soft hair flare, then work the thread forward through the butts to the eye.
Wiggle the hair roughly out to each side spinner-style (ragged is correct), stretch the foam forward over the thorax to the eye, tie it off with three or four turns, and whip finish under the foam, leaving a short foam stub over the eye.
Brush the wings out to the sides and stroke a yellow Sharpie up and down the hair to produce the gray-and-yellow PMD wing color.
