How to tie it
Seat the 4.0mm slotted bead at the jig eye, then add six or seven wraps of.010 lead behind it and shove them up into the back of the bead. The lead is there to fill the gap behind the bead as much as to add weight, which stops the bead rocking.
Start the yellow 70D and tie in a short, split pair of yellow pheasant tail fibers at the bend for the tails, no longer than half the shank. Stoneflies have two stubby tails and getting them split makes the silhouette right.
Tie in the 3x tippet rib and lay the large opal tinsel back along the top of the shank, then dub a tapered golden yellow alpaca abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
Pull the opal tinsel forward over the back as a flashback and hold it, then rib the 3x tippet forward in five or six open turns over the top of it. The clear tippet segments the body and pins the tinsel down at the same time, which is far more durable than wire over a soft dubbing.
Tie in a yellow CDC feather by the tip at the 60% mark and take one turn, then a select hen saddle feather in front of it for a second turn. The CDC gives fine movement and the hen gives structure, so the collar keeps its shape but still breathes.
Dub a short, spiky yellow Arizona Diamond Dub collar over the feather butts up to the bead, and pick it out hard with a brush so the fibers stand out through the hackle.
Whip finish behind the bead and leave the fly unsealed so the CDC and picked-out fibers keep working. The tyer notes this one scales across a range of sizes, so tie it heavier and larger for spring and smaller for summer.
