Shrimp · Bonefish · Redfish · Sea Trout · Snook · Permit · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook bendback saltwater hook (shank kinked up), 2-6
  • Thread black 6/0 or 210 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Bead-chain or small lead eyes (1 pair)
  • Antennae/tail Black and purple Krystal Flash + few strands bucktail (small bunch)
  • Legs Black/purple rubber or Sili Legs (4-6)
  • Body Black and purple craft-fur or EP fibre (small bunch)
  • Wing/back Purple Krystal Flash over the top (few strands)
  • Weedguard The bendback shank itself (point rides up) (-)

How to tie it

  1. On the bendback hook (shank bent slightly up near the eye), tie in bead-chain or light lead eyes near the eye so the fly rides hook-point up and stays weedless.
  2. At the bend, tie in a sparse shrimp 'nose'/antennae of black and purple Krystal Flash with a few strands of bucktail, extending past the bend.
  3. Add two or three pairs of black/purple rubber legs so they splay to the sides.
  4. Tie in a body clump of black and purple craft-fur or EP fibre and, using the bendback so the wing sits on top, sweep it back over the point to hide the hook and imitate the shrimp body.
  5. Lay a few strands of purple Krystal Flash over the top as a back, then build a tapered head.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and cement; the bendback profile makes it land soft and ride weed-free.
