Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavyweight grub/emerger hook, barbless, 16-18
  • Thread Dark brown 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Black bead (2.4mm tungsten)
  • Tail/legs Brown silly legs nymph size (partridge feather fibers)
  • Abdomen Brown permanent marker (holographic tinsel (medium))
  • Rib Brown permanent marker (small Ultra Wire)
  • Wing case Mottled natural thin skin (thin skin)
  • Crack back Fluorescent yellow round braid (UV resin over the wing case)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the black tungsten bead on, mount the hook, and start thread behind the bead.
  2. Tie in a small bunch of partridge fibers at the bend for a short tail, then set a few aside toward the front for legs.
  3. Bind in the brown wire, then wrap the holographic tinsel forward as a slim, tapered abdomen to the 60% mark. Keep it thin to match the natural.
  4. Counter-wrap the wire rib in 5-6 open turns, bind, and helicopter off.
  5. Tie in a strip of mottled thin skin for the wing case, pointing rearward.
  6. Fold partridge fibers along each side as emerger legs, then pull the thin skin forward over the thorax and pin behind the bead.
  7. Whip finish, then run a thin line of fluorescent yellow UV resin down the wing case and cure to form the glowing 'crack' of the splitting shuck.
