Reference Recipe

  • Hook Strong saltwater hook, 4-8
  • Thread Orange 140 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Silver metal tape (bead-chain or brass dumbbell)
  • Antennae Black ostrich herl (Krystal Flash)
  • Shrimp eyes Black ostrich herl (mono/burnt eyes)
  • Chin Tan carapace (coyote fur)
  • Body Tan/white material (EP foxy or fibre brush)
  • Legs Tan speckled rubber legs (rubber crusher legs)
  • Hot spot Orange permanent marker (polyester rug yarn)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lash bead-chain or a light dumbbell near the eye so the fly rides hook-point-up.
  2. At the bend, tie in black Krystal Flash antennae and a pair of mono shrimp eyes splayed wide.
  3. Add a small clump of coyote fur under the shank as the chin/mouthparts.
  4. Tie in an orange yarn hot spot at the belly to imitate the spawn sac.
  5. Spin or wrap an EP fibre brush forward to build a tapered shrimp body toward the eyes.
  6. Figure-8 in a couple of speckled rubber legs each side.
  7. Wrap past the eyes, build a head, whip finish, then brush out and trim the body to a shrimp shape.
