Cousin It Sculpin Jig

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy jig streamer hook, 4-8
  • Thread Tan or olive 140 denier

Materials

  • Bead Black or copper slotted tungsten bead (large slotted tungsten)
  • Tail/body Sculpin tan or olive (squirrel zonker strip)
  • Collar Sculpin tan (long-fibered dubbing)
  • Head Sculpin tan (spun/picked dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the large slotted bead on the jig hook, mount it, and start thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in a squirrel zonker strip as a tail, about one-and-a-half shank lengths long, hair flowing back.
  3. Palmer the front of the strip forward a couple of turns, or leave it as a tail and move on, to build the flowing body.
  4. Spin a dubbing loop of long-fibered sculpin dubbing and wrap it as a shaggy collar behind the bead.
  5. Sweep and pick the dubbing back to blend it into the zonker so the whole fly is a flowing mass. The 'Cousin It' look.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and stroke all the fibers rearward.
