Reference Recipe

  • Hook 60-degree jig nymph hook, 12-16
  • Thread Camel or brown 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Copper or gold slotted tungsten bead (slotted tungsten, sized to hook)
  • Tail Coq de Leon (small bunch of fibers)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (small wire)
  • Body Natural grey-brown material (squirrel dubbing)
  • Legs Brown silly legs nymph size (fine rubber legs)
  • Thorax Natural grey-brown material (picked-out squirrel dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Seat the slotted bead on the jig hook, mount it, and start thread behind the bead.
  2. Tie in a small bunch of Coq de Leon fibers for the tail, one shank length long.
  3. Bind in the copper wire, then dub a slim squirrel body forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the copper rib in 5-6 open turns, bind, and helicopter off.
  5. Tie in a pair of rubber legs on each side, angled back along the body.
  6. Dub a shaggy squirrel thorax up to the bead, working around the legs.
  7. Pick out the thorax dubbing to make it buggy, then whip finish.
