Corn Fed Caddis

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 12-18
  • Thread Tan 70 denier

Materials

  • Body Tan or olive d rib larva lace (fine dry-fly dubbing)
  • Rib/hackle Grizzly hackle (1 dry-fly saddle hackle)
  • Wing Natural coastal deer (small bunch of hair)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread, running a smooth base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a grizzly saddle hackle by the tip at the bend, then dub a slim tapered body forward to the 70% mark.
  3. Palmer the hackle forward over the body in 5-6 open turns, bind at the front, and snip the tip.
  4. Trim the hackle flat across the bottom so the fly sits flush in the film. This is the key to the footprint.
  5. Stack a small bunch of coastal deer hair and measure it one shank length, then bind it as a down-wing tented over the body.
  6. Trim the wing butts to a short bullet head, whip finish, and cement.
