Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 4 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly hook, 12-18
  • Thread Tan 70 denier

Materials

  • Shuck Tan or white material (sparse Antron)
  • Body Tan carapace (Superfine dubbing)
  • Underwing Natural dun CDC (1-2 CDC feathers)
  • Overwing White uni stretch (poly yarn)
  • Collar Natural CDC (1 CDC feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread, laying a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short sparse Antron shuck, no longer than half a shank.
  3. Dub a slim tapered body forward to the 65% mark.
  4. Tie in one or two dun CDC feathers flat over the body as an underwing, tips reaching the bend.
  5. Add a short tuft of white poly yarn on top as a visible overwing/indicator, then trim to length.
  6. Tie in a natural CDC feather and take 1-2 turns for a soft buggy collar, then sweep the fibers back.
  7. Build a small head and whip finish. Keep floatant off the CDC, use a shake-style desiccant instead.
