Materials
Hackle tips Not specified in the video (Two, prepped to length, quills left long)
Gold wire Gold wire (One strand for the rib)
Mylar tinsel Gold oval tinsel (One strand for the body)
Red squirrel tail Natural red squirrel (A small bunch for the wing)
Saddle hackle fibers Yellow saddle hackle (A small bunch for the throat)
Head cement Clear head cement (A drop)
How to tie it
Lay a thread base along the shank, leaving room for a head.
Tie in two prepared hackle tips at the bend as a splayed tail, leaving their quills long so they run forward along the shank as an underbody.
Tie in the gold wire at the bend, running it back along the length of the thread base.
Tie in the mylar tinsel at the bend with the silver side showing so gold shows when wrapped, again the length of the thread base.
Wrap the thread forward over the hackle quills and the material butts, keeping everything on top of the shank (rather than underneath as usual) so the quills lie flat, and build a smooth, even underbody.
Wrap the tinsel gold side out: one turn at the very back, then forward in touching turns to the front, and tie it off.
Counter-wind the gold wire forward as a rib in evenly spaced turns, tie it off and helicopter or clip the excess. Straighten the tail if it has moved.
Tie in the red squirrel tail wing on top, slipping one thread wrap up between the hair and the shank before binding it down so the slippery hair cannot pull out.
Take the thread to the back of the head, invert the fly and tie in a small bunch of yellow saddle hackle fibers as a short throat.
