Slide the 4.0mm gold brass bead onto the hook (hold the bead in your palm and bring the hook to it) and mount the hook.
Wrap eight turns of 015 lead wire behind the bead and push them forward into the bead to stabilize it.
Start the Black Veevus 6/0 thread, wrap up onto the lead and back to smooth the step between the lead and the shank.
Pull two Brown Goose Biots, pair them back to back so the tips splay outward, and snip the frayed butts square. Measure the tail at half a shank length, clip the butts so they sit against the lead wraps, hold with two loose wraps, then tighten and bind rearward to just shy of the bend, pinching the biots against the shank as you go; they splay as they tighten, which is what you want.
Tie the copper UTC Ultra Wire in along the side of the shank, tip not past the lead bump. Build a thread taper: up to the bead and halfway back, up to the bead and a little further back, repeating until the underbody is a full, smooth taper.
Wrap the wire in tight touching turns, the first turn by hand and then on the rotary, keeping each turn hard against the last, to about two-thirds of the shank. Bind it off, pull the wire forward and wrap to just under the bead, then helicopter it off. Smooth the thorax area with thread.
Tie in one strand of Saltwater sized Flashabou directly on top of the shank, back to the wire wraps but not over them, and clip it back out of the way.
Tie in the Baby Bug Back Black strip directly on top, over the Flashabou, back to the wire; pull it forward to check where it will end.
Pull one Peacock Hurl, break off the fragile tip, and tie it in on one side with the bushy side facing down. Wrap it forward in tight touching turns to the bead, lock it with under-over-under-over-under wraps, and break or snip it off.
Prepare a speckled Hen Saddle feather with squared tips: strip the fuzz, snip the tip out to make a V, thinning further if it is too full. Lay the V on top, stroke the fibers down and back, and hold it with one or two loose wraps. Bring the Baby Bug Back over the top with one loose wrap, pull the feather stem to shorten the legs to about a hook gap, take one very tight wrap, and trim feather and bug back close.
Pull the Flashabou forward over the thorax, bind it with a couple of tight wraps, fold it back and take one wrap in front; whip finish and clip.
Coat the thorax with Solarez Thick from the bead back to the copper wire, touching the wire, and cure with the UV light.
