Materials
Bead Copper, 1/16-inch
Trailing shuck Krystal Flash, copper, one strand
Rib Ultra Wire, small or extra small, copper
Wing bud Diamond Braid, pearl midge
Thorax Peacock-eye herl
How to tie it
Pick up the Copper 1/16-inch bead on a popsicle stick tipped with a skim of dubbing wax, thread the hook point through the small hole, slide the bead to the eye and mount the hook.
Start the light brown 6/0 thread behind the bead, take wraps rearward and snip the tag.
Snip one strand of copper Krystal Flash, tie one end in behind the bead and bind it along the top of the shank well down into the bend, then return the thread to the tie-in point.
Tie in the copper Ultra Wire on top of the shank and bind it with adjacent thread wraps rearward to the start of the Krystal Flash. Leave the thread there.
Wrap the wire forward in open spiral turns, then advance the thread forward through the spaces between the wire turns. Brace on the bobbin nozzle and helicopter the wire off; take a few wraps rearward to secure it and leave the thread just behind the hook point.
Snip the Krystal Flash to a trailing shuck about one shank length long.
Tie in a short length of pearl midge Diamond Braid on top of the shank, binding rearward to just behind the hook point, and snip it to a wing bud about half a shank length.
Snip one Peacock-eye herl from the eye, about where the copper colour starts. Orient it stem side toward you and up, secure it to the near side of the shank and bind back to the base of the wing bud, checking the stem side faces forward.
Wrap the herl forward to the bead; each turn's fibers cover the stem of the previous wrap, and the thread holds the herl back so it cannot slide forward. Take two thread wraps over the herl and snip it off close.
Three or four turn whip finish, seat it tightly, and snip the thread.
