Reference Recipe

  • Hook Streamer hook with mono/wire tail loop, 2-4 (front) with trailing stinger hook
  • Thread Olive 210 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Heavy lead dumbbell (one pair)
  • Tail Olive/tan schlappen feathers, splayed (2-4 feathers)
  • Tail flash/marabou Olive marabou (one plume)
  • Body Olive/tan dubbing (as needed)
  • Head Olive and tan deer hair or wool, spun (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. On the rear of the shank, dub a small bump to splay the tail, then tie in schlappen feathers cut into V's, facing back, to each side of the bump for a wide splayed tail.
  2. Add a marabou plume over the tail extending to the middle of the feathers for movement.
  3. Rig a trailing stinger hook on hard mono if desired, then dub a stout body forward two-thirds of the shank.
  4. Tie in heavy lead dumbbell eyes directly behind the hook eye so the fly rides point-up and digs to the bottom.
  5. Spin clumps of olive and tan deer hair or wool over the front third and pack them tight around the eyes.
  6. Trim the head very wide and flat, broad on top and flat underneath, into a big sculpin silhouette.
  7. Whip finish and cement.
