Conehead Wool Sculpin

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL streamer hook, 2-8
  • Thread Tan 140 denier

Materials

  • Cone Gold or black conehead (1)
  • Tail Olive/tan marabou (one plume)
  • Body Tan/olive dubbing or chenille (as needed)
  • Hackle Grizzly or webby brown saddle (1 feather)
  • Pectoral fins Mottled hen or partridge (2 feathers)
  • Head Olive and tan wool, spun (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the cone to the eye and mount the hook. Start thread and run it to the bend.
  2. Tie in an olive/tan marabou tail one shank length long for a broad, mobile tail.
  3. Bind in the hackle by the tip, wrap a dubbed or chenille body forward two-thirds of the shank, then palmer the hackle over it and tie off.
  4. Tie a mottled hen feather flat to each side as splayed pectoral fins.
  5. Spin clumps of olive and tan wool on the front third and pack them tight behind the cone.
  6. Trim the wool head flat and wide, broad on top and flat underneath, into a sculpin shape.
  7. Whip finish behind the cone and cement.
