Classic Recipe

  • Hook Streamer, 4x long, 4-8
  • Thread Brown 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Mottled turkey quill (1 slip)
  • Body Flat gold tinsel (wrapped)
  • Wing Turkey quill + squirrel tail (layered)
  • Collar Deer hair (flared)
  • Head Brass or tungsten cone (1)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the cone onto the hook before mounting. Small end facing the eye.
  2. Start thread behind the cone. Tie in a slip of mottled turkey quill at the bend for the tail, about half a shank length long.
  3. Wrap flat gold tinsel forward in smooth, touching turns to the 65% mark. Keep each wrap flat. Overlapping tinsel looks messy.
  4. Tie in a sparse clump of squirrel tail as an underwing, then a slip of turkey quill over the top as the overwing. Both should extend to the tail tip.
  5. Spin a clump of deer hair as a collar. Let it flare but don't clip it. The unclipped tips flowing back give the Muddler its characteristic profile.
  6. Pack the deer hair tight against the cone. Tie off behind the cone and whip finish.
