Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 10-12
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Moose body or dark Coq de Leon (3-4 fibers)
  • Body Olive-green dubbing (as needed)
  • Rib Yellow-olive thread or fine floss (one strand)
  • Wing Dun deer hair or gray poly (one clump)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed olive hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread. Tie in a split tail of moose fibers one shank length long at the bend.
  2. Bind in the ribbing, then dub a tapered olive-green body forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Counter-wrap the rib 4-5 evenly spaced turns for segmentation and tie it off.
  4. Stack a clump of dun deer hair and tie it in as an upright wing at the 65% mark, posting it with a few wraps around the base.
  5. Tie in the grizzly-olive hackle behind the wing.
  6. Take 4-5 turns of hackle through the thorax, front and back of the wing, then tie off and snip.
  7. Build a small head and whip finish.
