Materials
Calf tail White calf body hair (A medium clump for the wing post)
Mylar tinsel Gold oval tinsel (One strand, size 16, for the tag (optional))
Golden pheasant tippets Natural barred golden pheasant tippets (Eight to ten fibers)
Ostrich herl (peacock herl substitutes) Black ostrich or peacock herl (One or two strands)
Dry fly hackle Brown / coachman brown dry fly hackle (One feather)
Head cement Clear head cement (A drop)
How to tie it
Lay a thread base over the front third of the shank. The wing goes on before the tail.
Take a medium clump of white calf tail, pull out the longest and shortest fibers by hand (it will not stack well), measure it slightly longer than the hackle will be and tie it in at the one-third point with several securing wraps.
Lift the butts to about 30 degrees, cut them off with the scissors parallel to the shank, and bind them back with loose wraps to build a taper.
Post the wing up with wraps in front until it stands just past vertical, leaning slightly forward.
Take the thread to the start of the bend and tie in the gold mylar with the gold side toward the hook; wrap three or four turns back and then back over themselves to form a small tag, and tie it off.
Tie in eight to ten golden pheasant tippet fibers over the tag as the tail, positioned so both black bars show, and smooth the underbody with a few wraps.
Tie in the black ostrich herl by its thin end and wrap it forward in touching turns to just behind the post, so the fibers lengthen slightly as you go. Lock it in with two wraps and trim.
Size a brown hackle at about one and a half hook gaps, strip the stem and tie it in behind the wing; wrap two or three turns behind the post and three or four in front, then tie off and trim.
Pull any forward-pointing fibers back, whip finish a small head in the flat spot, and add a drop of head cement.
