Collared Caddis

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Body Olive-brown dubbing (sparse)
  • Wing Natural elk or deer hair (one small clump)
  • Collar Brown partridge or hen soft hackle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the 70% mark. Dub a slim body back to the bend and forward again to the starting point.
  2. Clean and stack a small clump of elk hair and measure it one shank length, tips reaching the bend.
  3. Bind the elk hair down at the 70% mark with firm pinch wraps so it flares slightly into a tent wing, then trim the butts.
  4. Tie in a brown partridge feather by the tip just ahead of the wing.
  5. Take 2-3 turns of the soft hackle as a sweeping collar, then stroke the fibers back and lock them down.
  6. Build a small head and whip finish.
