Colby's Mini Corona Toad

Crab · Permit · Redfish · Bonefish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Stainless saltwater hook, size 4, 4-6
  • Thread Tan 140 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Small black dumbbell (one pair)
  • Tail Tan craft fur (one small clump)
  • Stalk eyes Mono crab eyes (one pair)
  • Legs Barred rubber legs (2 pairs)
  • Body Tan/olive EP or cross-cut rabbit (as needed)
  • Weed guard Hard mono (single or double loop)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the size 4 hook and start thread. Figure-8 small dumbbell eyes near the bend on top for a hook-point-up ride.
  2. Tie in a short, sparse craft fur tail, about one and a half shank lengths, keeping the whole fly light and small.
  3. Add mono stalk eyes and a pair of barred rubber legs splayed at the tail base.
  4. Spin or dub a compact tan body forward to behind the dumbbell, keeping it slim so it stays light.
  5. Trim the body flat top and bottom into a small low-riding toad shape.
  6. Add a mono weed guard, build a small head, and whip finish. Use it for spooky, shallow redfish and bonefish where a soft, quiet landing matters.
