Colby's Corona Toad--By Rainy's

Crab · Permit · Redfish · Bonefish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Stainless saltwater hook, 2-4
  • Thread Tan 210 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Black dumbbell (one pair)
  • Tail Tan/olive craft fur (one clump)
  • Stalk eyes Mono crab eyes (one pair)
  • Legs Barred rubber legs (2 pairs)
  • Body Tan/pearl EP or cross-cut rabbit (as needed)
  • Weed guard Hard mono (double loop)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread. Figure-8 the dumbbell eyes near the bend on top so the fly rides point-up.
  2. Tie in a long craft fur tail at the rear, about two shank lengths, sparse enough to breathe in the water.
  3. Add mono stalk eyes splayed at the base of the tail, then a pair of barred rubber legs to each side.
  4. Dub or spin the tan/pearl body material and pack it forward to just behind the dumbbell, building a broad toad-style head.
  5. Trim the body flat top and bottom so it lands soft and sinks level.
  6. Tie in a doubled mono weed guard, build a neat head, and whip finish.
