Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy-wire salmon/steelhead hook, 4-8
  • Thread Fluorescent red 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Silver bead chain (one pair)
  • Tail Fluorescent pink bucktail (a sparse clump)
  • Body Silver flat tinsel (one strand)
  • Hackle Hot pink saddle (1 feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread behind the eye. Figure-8 the bead-chain eyes on one shank width back from the eye and lock them with a few wraps under the base.
  2. Bind in a sparse pink bucktail tail one and a half shank lengths long, extending well past the bend for movement.
  3. Tie in the flat tinsel at the tail and wrap the thread forward to just behind the eyes.
  4. Wind the tinsel forward in touching turns, shiny side out, to build a bright even body, then tie off behind the eyes and snip.
  5. Tie in the hot pink saddle by the tip behind the eyes and take 3-4 turns as a soft collar, sweeping the fibers back.
  6. Figure-8 the thread through the eyes, build a small head in front of them, and whip finish.
