Catskill Dressing

  • Hook Long-shank dry fly, 10-14
  • Thread White 6/0

Materials

  • Tail Black and white peccary (3 fibers, splayed)
  • Body White poly yarn (palmered with trimmed white saddle)
  • Rib White thread (counter-wrapped)
  • Hackle Dark badger or grizzly hackle (at the head)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the long-shank hook and start white thread.
  2. Tie in three black-and-white peccary fibers, splayed, one shank length long.
  3. Tie in a white saddle hackle and a length of white poly yarn at the bend; wrap the yarn forward as a plump white body.
  4. Palmer the white saddle hackle forward over the body with its barbs trimmed short, then counter-wrap white thread through it in 5-6 turns to lock it. The trimmed palmer gives a segmented, breathing body.
  5. Wind a dark badger or grizzly hackle at the head for the wings/legs impression.
  6. Whip finish.
