Reference Recipe

  • Hook Saltwater/tarpon hook, 3/0-1
  • Thread Red 210 denier flat waxed nylon

Materials

  • Tail Grizzly hackle (4-6 saddle hackles, splayed)
  • Flash Pearl flashabou (few strands (optional))
  • Collar Gray fox squirrel (tail hair, tied all around)
  • Head Red buzzer wrap (thread)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the tarpon hook and start red thread at the rear third of the shank.
  2. Tie in four to six grizzly saddle hackles splayed outward as the tail, two to three shanks long, so they kick and flare on the strip.
  3. Add a few strands of pearl flash along the tail if you want extra flash.
  4. Just forward of the tail, tie in a full collar of gray fox squirrel tail distributed all the way around the shank so it sweeps back over the tail.
  5. Wrap a smooth, prominent red thread head, whip finish, and snip.
  6. Coat the head with a drop of head cement or resin.
