Cochybondhu

Wet Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet/dry fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Gold middle (flat tinsel, few turns)
  • Body Peacock ice dub (two or three herls)
  • Hackle Coch-y-bondhu (one feather (red-brown with black center and tips))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread; wind a short flat-gold tag at the bend, a few tight turns.
  2. Tie in two or three peacock herls at the bend.
  3. Twist the herls lightly and wrap them forward into a plump body, stopping a third of a shank behind the eye.
  4. Tie in a coch-y-bondhu hackle, red-brown with a black center and black tips, by the tip.
  5. Take three or four turns of hackle as a collar and tie off, sweeping the fibers slightly back.
  6. Build a small head, whip finish, and snip.
