Cochy Bonddu

Wet Fly · Trout · Grayling · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard wet/dry fly, 12-14
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Tag Flat gold tinsel (2-3 turns)
  • Body Peacock herl (2-3 strands)
  • Hackle Coch-y-bonddu (furnace with black tips) cock hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Wrap 2-3 turns of flat gold tinsel at the bend as a tag, the gold flash imitates the beetle's underwing showing in the water.
  2. Tie in the peacock herls, twist them into a rope with the thread, and wrap a plump body to the 80% mark.
  3. Tie in the genuine coch-y-bonddu hackle, red-brown with a black center AND black tips.
  4. Wind 3-4 turns, fuller for the dry version, 2 sparse turns for the wet.
  5. Whip finish a small black head.
