Cocaine Coyote

Streamer · Striped Bass · Bluefish · Jack · Tarpon · Snook · Redfish · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Saltwater flats hook, 2-6
  • Thread Tan 140 denier

Materials

  • Eyes Silver bead chain or lead (medium (rides hook-up))
  • Tail/wing Tan carapace (coyote hair with black-tipped guard hairs)
  • Flash Pearl/tan flash (few strands EP flash)
  • Body Tan carapace (EP or synthetic dubbing brush)
  • Weed guard Clear weed guard (mono loop)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread; lash bead-chain or lead eyes a third of a shank behind the eye so the hook rides point-up over the flats.
  2. Tie in a clump of tan coyote hair at the bend for the tail, keeping the black-tipped guard hairs so it reads like a finger mullet's dark tail. About one and a half shanks long.
  3. Add a few strands of pearl flash along the tail.
  4. Build a slim tapered body with EP or synthetic dubbing forward to just behind the eyes.
  5. Tie in a mono weed-guard loop under the hook point so it clears turtle grass, then bind it forward.
  6. Sweep a little more coyote over the top as a sparse wing, whip finish behind the eye, and snip.
