Clown Egg

Egg · Trout · Steelhead · Salmon · Intermediate · 2 versions

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Egg hook or scud, 8-12
  • Thread Multi-color

Materials

  • Body Egg yarn (3+ colors layered) (round)
  • Veil McFly Foam (white) (wispy)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the short-shank egg hook, start thread at midshank.
  2. Stack 3-4 colors of egg yarn (orange, pink, chartreuse) and lay the bundle crosswise over the shank.
  3. Lock the bundle down with tight X-wraps. The yarn should flare up and out on both sides.
  4. Gather all the strands straight up in one hand, pull firm, and cut across in a single scissor stroke slightly above the shank. The yarn springs into a ball. One cut, one egg.
  5. The colors mottle together into a multi-colored egg. Optionally veil it with a wisp of white McFly Foam tied over the top.
  6. Whip finish and cement the thread wraps.
