Hook 2X long curved-shank terrestrial hook (a straight 2X long dry fly hook works too), #6-10 (tied here in #10)
Thread White, or matched to the body colour 70 denier
Materials
Foam, 2mm Tan (underbody / middle layer) (One strip)
Foam, 2mm Pink or purple (also good in tan, dark brown or olive) (Two strips, one for the segmented body, one for the top)
Para post / white synthetic yarn White poly yarn (About an inch for the indicator)
Barred Silly Legs Black and white rubber legs (Four strands, knotted in pairs. Two pairs total)
How to tie it
Lay a thread base along the full length of the body area.
Catch the tan foam strip in at the front and wrap it down tightly against the shank all the way back to the bend. This is the middle layer and it keeps the body even.
Tie the coloured (pink or purple) foam strip in just in front of the rear tie-down point, then fold it up over itself and take two or three wraps; lift it, take a couple of wraps underneath, and repeat forward to build about four segments up to the midpoint. Keeping the wraps light stops you matting down the foam that does the floating.
At the midpoint fold the coloured foam over and secure it with a couple of wraps. That is the back half of the body done, with the front flap left long to become the head.
Tie in about an inch of white para post at its middle as the indicator, fold it back and trim it to about the back of the body.
Knot two strands of barred Silly Legs together, trim so one strand comes off the back and two off the front, and tie a set in on each side with two wraps, with the knot sitting about at the back of the fly. Trim the rear legs to length.
Lay the top piece of coloured foam over the fly, sandwiching the white indicator between the two foam layers, and secure it with a couple of tight wraps, checking that the legs have not been pulled out of position.
Bring the thread underneath and back up, and catch in the second pair of knotted legs on each side with the same wraps.
Trim the foam butts in front of the eye to leave a short blunt head, whip finish, and even up all the legs.
