Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry fly hook, 8-12
  • Thread Yellow 3/0

Materials

  • Body Golden yellow polar bear or substitute (macrame poly yarn, singed at the tip)
  • Wing Natural case (elk hair, unstacked)
  • Hackle Ginger hackle (one feather, wrapped at head)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start yellow thread; bind a strand of golden-yellow macrame yarn along the shank with a stub extending one shank length past the bend.
  2. Singe the trailing tip with a lighter and pinch it to a taper so it sheds water and floats.
  3. Wind the thread back to the 70% mark over the bound yarn to smooth the underbody.
  4. Clean a bundle of elk hair and, without stacking, tie it in as a wing with the tips just past the end of the yarn body.
  5. Tie in a ginger hackle and take three or four turns in front of the wing; tie off.
  6. Form a small head, whip finish, and snip.
