Dry Fly · Trout · Beginner · 1 version

Tyer Recipe

  • Hook standard dry fly, 14-18
  • Thread tan 8/0

Materials

  • Z-Lon underwing/trailing shuck Amber zelon or antron (small clump)
  • dubbing Tan/olive scud dubbing (thin body)
  • deer hair wing Natural deer hair (sparse clump)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread mid-shank and lay a smooth base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short amber Z-Lon shuck at the bend, no longer than half the hook shank.
  3. Dub a thin tapered body forward to about two eye-widths behind the eye.
  4. Cut, clean, and stack a sparse clump of deer hair; measure the tips to reach the end of the shank and tie in as a down-wing over the body.
  5. Trim the butts, build a small head, and whip finish.
