Reference Recipe

  • Hook 3XL nymph/streamer hook, 8-14
  • Thread White 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Weight Lead-free (.025 wire, 15 wraps)
  • Tail Lemon wood duck (small flank feather clump)
  • Body Black ostrich herl (wool yarn)
  • Hackle Grizzly hackle (one feather, palmered and clipped)
  • Head Colored with marker (thread, Sharpied to taste)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start white thread; run 15 wraps of.025 lead-free wire over the middle of the shank and lock it down.
  2. Tie in a short clump of lemon wood duck flank at the bend for the tail, about a third of a shank long.
  3. Bind in a grizzly hackle by the tip and a length of black wool at the bend.
  4. Wrap the wool forward into a slim, even body and tie off a full eye-length short of the eye.
  5. Palmer the grizzly hackle forward in five evenly spaced turns over the body, then take two more turns tight at the front as a collar; tie off.
  6. Clip the hackle flush top and bottom, leaving only the side fibers as legs. This is Kraft's signature buggy silhouette.
  7. Build a small head, whip finish, and snip; color the white head with a marker in whatever shade you like.
